Picking up berserk was one of the best decisions I made in the lockdown, I’m a huge manga fan even though I haven’t finished much content I’m always reading something and, honestly, it’s a lot more accessible than anime is. Berserk summarized in one word would be expressive. It speaks a million words in a single panel and I can’t get enough of it.

Ways Berserk's Golden Age Arc Is The Best In Manga History

Golden age arc comprises of those chapters which show us why Guts is the way he is. It builds his character right from scratch while creating one of the greatest antagonist back-stories you’ll ever see. The story of Berserk isn’t mind-boggling but how it’s written. Amidst a battlefield, from a dead mother’s womb; Guts is found breathing and taken in by Gambino and his gang, A bunch of mercenaries. Gambino’s wife takes care of Guts but, she loses her life to plague and Gambino blames our MC for this series of events. Right before this flashback began we see Guts find Behelit and fight a bunch of monsters as the ‘Brand’ on his neck bleed, he finds himself attracting more as he kills. He swears to find “that person” as he tries to get some sleep.

Back to the flashback, Gambino pays his members to rape Guts and, this leaves him traumatised. Sexual assault and Rape are a recurring theme in Berserk as he questions his father figure. The man who taught him everything wants him destroyed, Guts had nobody to call his own and this event further develops his character as it becomes one of the key ingredients to his development. The battlefield was all that Guts knew, he lived and breathed the way of survival hence his battle instincts told him his survival is inevitable if he doesn’t kill Gambino, which he ends up doing. He escapes and starts freelancing until he gets recruited by an ambitious young man called Griffith. Griffith has this aura surrounding him, almost divine-like. It’s like he can do no wrong and has his life figured out, A war maniac like Guts required direction which Griffith swears to provide. He speaks in such a fashion as if he is next to none and he delivers, Band of Hawks; His group of mercenaries that are a group of misfits all united under his jurisdiction. Guts who was never loved and never knew relationships was always hesitant to form meaningful relationships where he also meets the tuff-headed Caska. He knows how to respond with the sword and only is able to do that, for most of the arc we see Guts get comfortable with being more humane and open with his team members and think of them as his own rather than just a war company.

I’d like to point out that berserk’s very first panel is Guts having sex with a women who turns into a monster, He proceeds to stuff his hands right in it’s mouth before killing it. Talk about an opener jeez

Even though Band of Hawks has just more than a handful of members, I’ll focus on the most recurring and striking ones; Our three main characters Guts, Caska and Griffith. United under the leadership of Griffith, BoH continues to wreak havoc and rise in ranks. It was almost as if Griffith had no loose ends. Griffith mentioned coming in power and taking over the kingdom and, even though it seemed far-fetched it never sounded wrong. Dreams hold a lot of value in this arc moreover every person of BoH has a different approach to it, Guts after spending some time with the Hawks aligned himself with whatever Griffth had in his mind. Griffith was wiser and stronger than Guts in the field, this was proven when they duelled and Guts lost. Griffith wanted to achieve much more than what a mere human could comprehend. He wanted the world when he was just another simpleton from the kingdom and, he didn’t fear to go great lengths for it like selling his body to that elder to provide for his army. (iykyk)

Griffith was an entity that most Hawks wanted to be like, It’s like he’s got it figured out all in his head. People who can’t lead often are led by people more level headed then they are, that’s who Griffith was. Even amongst the nobles, a commoner like him was feared due to his wit and experience with the sword. It really makes you wonder sometimes is

Berserk isn’t a romance manga but Miura doesn’t forget to add a fierce female lead and love interest in Berserk through Caska.

Casca starts of really annoying, somebody who wouldn’t leave Griffith alone for a second. Sometimes it seemed as if she liked him but as and as chapters flow by we realize its more of respect and admiration. Casca was born to a family with six other siblings, with little to no money they survived off whatever they could. She got molested at a young age when Griffith saved her and gave her an option to survive which she took and became a powerful member of the Hawks only behind Griffith himself. Quoting the wiki page of Casca “Beneath this guarded exterior, however, Casca yearns for acceptance as both a warrior and as a woman, which she originally desires from Griffith.” is something I think describes her the best. Casca over few years becomes closer to Guts as their love-hate relationship continues and solidifies right when the Capturing of Doldorey arc finishes. Guts never saw anybody in the light as he saw Casca as he acknowledges her which Griffith never does. Casca’s admiration turns to love slowly and when they’re isolated together under the cliff, they cement their relationship.

Guts grows impatient as his life isn’t moving forward, He’s been under Griffith and inspired by him and sort of him wanting more with his life he makes a decision of leaving the Hawks. Guts eventually beats Griffith in a duel which many people of the Hawks rule out to be a fluke but Guts was matured and headstrong, he knew what he wanted. The exit of Guts from BoH causes Griffith to absolutely lose his shit, as he ends up getting physical with the princess of the kingdom. The hawks are branded as enemies of the state and Griffith is imprisoned and tortured for a year straight, this all happens when Guts is gone and a year away. The hawks don’t know what caused all this as nobody knew what really happened that day.

A year passes by, Casca is now the leader of the hawks. Griffith is still alive but is a bag of rotten flesh and bones; not able to speak anymore and just the skin of his former glory. Guts returns to the Hawks having received their word and heads to rescue Griffith with the other. All this while many times it’s referenced that something huge will happen and Zodd tells Guts that Griffith’s downfall is near. Behelit always around his neck but now being tortured an entire year he has lost it, we wonder what now. The next few chapters show the Hawks rescue Griffith as he witnesses the changes in Guts and Casca and how they’ve grown close. This plays an important role in shaping Casca and later on Griffith’s actions. There’s a monkey demon fight and guts absolutely killed it, quite literally.

The Hawks escape the Tower of Rebirth where Griffith was kept, We get to see an internal conflict and monologue from Griffith where he reminisces of what life could’ve been and a chapter dedicated to how and what he felt before he commits the sacrifice. This chapter focuses on how Griffith is ready to do anything to return to glory and this is done by showing an old granny who tells him he wouldn’t be able to achieve anything unless he doesn’t do sacrifices. Up until this point, no character acts out of what they have drawn to be; Every action is justified. The only time somebody acts out of character is when Griffith and his deed with the princess, that isn’t what Griffith in his senses would have done. Even though I don’t support Griffith the sacrifice was totally in his character, He was built that way since Day 1. How far are you willing to go to get what you want and what will you do to get it back, Hence the sacrifice occurs and Griffith is
