I just saw a bit of the Kyoukai no Kanata (#ad) or Beyond the Boundary anime series, so don’t really know much about it yet. And that’s why there’s no spoiler warning in this post.
Anyway, my initial thoughts about the Akihito Kanbara and Mirai Kuriyama romance is that I don’t like it. It’s not that I don’t like them. No, wait, scratch that.

Actually, from what I’ve seen so far of Mirai Kuriyama, I don’t really like her. Who knows, maybe if I see more of this series / show, I’ll get to like her, but, at the moment, nope, totally not liking her. I talk a bit more about the reasons why in this post here.
Kyoukai No Kanata: After Story
Akihito Kanbara isn’t that bad though. He seems like an all right character, so far. I’m just not sure about pairing those 2 up.
Well, Kanbara apparently likes people who wear glasses. Oh, look, Mirai wears glasses. What a coincidence. Not. Does that sound contrived to you or what?
So far, haven’t really seen the 2 interact much with each other yet. The few times I saw them talking or hanging out - it just didn’t really seem or feel right.
Action Anime With Little Romance?
For instance, I saw this scene where Kuriyama went to Akihito’s house. At that time, Sakura Inami was there, but Kanbara didn’t tell Mirai about this.
I found that kind of annoying. Like, how is that her business? It’s the guy’s house, right, not hers? So what’s it to her if he brings people to his house?
He should be able to bring whoever he wants to his house without having to consult or tell Kuriyama about it. In this scene, it seemed like she believed that she was entitled to know what Kanbara’s up to.
Akihito And Mirai
They're not even lovers, so it's all the more reason why it's none of her business what he does. They may be friends, but that doesn't mean he has to tell her things.
Anyway, from what I could see so far, unfortunately, it seems pretty obvious that those 2 would end up together. Sigh. How predictable.
Oh, well. If that’s really the case, if I see more of Beyond the Boundary / Kyoukai no Kanata, I just hope that their relationship improves and becomes more believable.

One day, Akihito meets freshman Mirai Kuriyama when it appears as if she is about to attempt suicide by jumping off of the school rooftop. Mirai is isolated because of her ability to manipulate blood, which is considered heresy even among other members of the underworld, so she is shunned. Soon after Akihito saves Mirai, disturbing events begin to arise. *Source ANN

A supernatural Anime with a good amount of comedy and romance, Kyoukai No Kanata was definitely something I was looking forward to. However probably because of my high expectations, the show failed to affect me the way I thought it would. No, I wouldn’t say it was thoroughly disappointing, but the overall impression was not quite satisfactory. Even though the Anime had it’s flaws, it can’t also be denied that it had few awesome moments at the same time.
Talking about the negative parts, I think the supernatural theme just didn’t work out, cause the whole set up was more fitting for the school life or slice of life genre. The way the show started, a darker tone was naturally expected, but as the story progressed it was falling short in this regard.

The first few episode were promising, the animation and art were drop dead gorgeous, so I thought that the show would only get better, but all my good vibes were turning into negative ones as I just couldn’t get emotionally involved with the show for some reasons. Story/characters were not given much scope for development. Be it the sister complex or Akkey’s weird mom, those forced comedy elements were just ruining the feel for me. Specially when the idol episode was put into the story, I got entirely distracted from the plot and dropped the series halfway.

On the bright side, the art and animation were just 10/10. The gorgeous looking characters, artistic way of presentation and specially the fight scenes were a treat for the eyes.So despite the unsatisfactory plot development, I resumed watching the show and I must say I enjoyed those last episodes more or less. The story was going somewhere and some moments were beautifully executed. The pure romance between Akihito and Mirai was also highlighted in a cute way, something which I was craving for. Their connection was visible throughout show, and it reached it’s peak in the latter episodes.
The ending felt rushed and a bit complicated. Some of the scenes made no sense to me whatsoever. Mirai’s repeated death & resurrection seemed irrelevant and ruined the overall impact of the previous episodes, though it would be a lie If I say I wasn’t glad to see her alive. 😛 But my point is, the whole death and revival could be executed in a more emotional and less stretched way. I’m yet to watch the movies, but as a stand alone the Anime ending was not satisfactory, probably cz I was expecting a lot more.
Even though the series was only 12 episodes long, a lot of characters were introduced thought out the show. As the main protagonist, Mirai was really cute. Those big red glasses made her look freaking kawaii! Her innocence was adorable and the last few episodes made me love her character more. Loved Akihito and his weird fetish as well.

I personally loved Izumi Nase and her brother Hiroomi Nase for delivering few breathtaking fighting scenes. I wish I got the chance to see them fight more often. However the rest of the characters couldn’t stand out as they didn’t get proper development. They were there in the show for a good amount of time, but I couldn’t connect to them emotionally.

Final Review/Thoughts – The show was good, but the inconsistent & flawed storytelling ruined the overall development. It had a good theme and the characters were unique, if utilized wisely this show could’ve been a lot better. Putting aside the negative points, the eye catching animation, artistic presentation and combat scenes were one of a kind, which made the show worth watching for me. Kyoukai no Kanata also known as “Beyond The Boundary” takes place in a world where creatures named Youmu are hunted by spirit warriors to protect the peace in the land. Mirai Kuriyama is a spirit warrior who right off the bat hunts the highschool student named Akihito Kanbara. Akihito is an immortal half human half youmu who tries to be friends with Mirai so that she would stop hunting him.
Kyoukai no Kanata has an average story for its genre. You have a main character who uses blood to fight and for some reason is the only one who has that power. The main character has internal struggles that he/she has to face and will eventually overcome.

Kyoukai no Kanata had a lot of themes. It had main characters who were discriminated upon but were trying to fit in the world they lived in. It had romance and family problems that created multiple plot holes throughout the series. The show lacked the episodes to clear out everything the viewers needed to know.
The characters were nice. Not everyone was developed or given the time to be shown but the main characters were good enough. There are anime in which you have to watch just so you can know who that character is. Mirai Kuriyama is part of that list.
The music of Kyoukai no Kanata was as nice as the visuals. It had music that you would put on your music player.

Kyoukai no Kanata starts really slow. Everything is a blur until the last three episodes. Even at that it lacked the episodes to truly be a great anime.
I liked Kyoukai no Kanata but it takes someone with
