Kissassian.Sh Go Go Squid

This drama that inspired me to write a blog. So, here’s my backstory. I used to be an anime nerd when I hit my early 20s. I made the jump to dramas, starting with the Japanese and Taiwanese versions of Boys Over Flowers. I was sucked into that world. It wasn’t long before I started watching Korean dramas and I never really looked back. Chinese dramas weren’t really on my radar, although I did happen across one called Romance of Red Rust that I loved so much that I became the proud owner of it on DVD. I know, I’m old. No one owns DVDs anymore.

So, really, Go Go Squid is my 3rd Chinese drama. Obviously when China did a new version of the Japanese manga classic, Hana Yori Dango/Boys Over Flowers/Meteor Garden, I had to check it out. More on that drama another day. I was curious though, and I was scrolling through Viki and checking out the highest rated Chinese dramas.

Go Go Squid is rated as a 9.6 on Viki as of this writing, which is extremely high. So, I watched it. And I was addicted to it. But I am really not sure why it has a 9.6 rating. I mean, points for the extremely hot male lead and the adorable female lead…. But as a non-Chinese person, maybe I am missing something?

The drama is called Go Go Squid and it’s about a computer science major (Tong Nian) falling in love with the grumpy coach of a competitive hacking team (Han Shanyang). When I say competitive hacking, I mean it’s completely government sanctioned. They have competitions like sports teams and compete against other teams and win trophies. For computer hacking. I don’t know if there is a better term than hacking (I grew up in the ’90s, leave me alone) but here we go. I don’t know if it’s a real thing that happens in the world, but I’m sure America is definitely not winning awards in competitive computer hacking.

Go Go Squid is also the name of the duo Tong Nian sings in, but it’s never really a major plot point, except for one episode. The drama becomes more about the relationship between her and Han Shanyang as he is pushing his team to be International hacking champions to bring glory to China.

Okay, the real reason I was addicted to this drama was the leads. I mean, I wasn’t prepared for how hard I would crush on Li Xian as Han Shanyang. And Yang Zi as Tong Nian is really freakin’ cute.

Go Go Squid Episode 41 Recap

I have watched a lot of Korean dramas and I am pretty familiar with Korean family culture. This was the first Chinese drama I watched where I was able to get a glimpse of Chinese family culture. It was a little jarring at times. Partly because I have an outsider’s perspective and I don’t have close ties to my parents or grandparents. When two people fall in love (this already sounds terrible), their parents meet each other to basically decide whether the relationship continues into marriage. In other countries and cultures, parents are very much involved in their children’s lives. Maybe that’s why the divorce rate in America is so high. We are thrust from our nests as soon as we hit college and are deemed failures if we end up living with our parents as adults. As a thirty-something living with my mother I am totally making fun of myself here. We also refuse to listen to our parents (or maybe it’s just me?) and prefer our independence (yeah that’s definitely me) and wouldn’t really listen to our parents if they hate our partners anyway.

I’ll be honest, the pacing for this show is slow, and I know after watching a handful of Taiwanese dramas, that it’s completely normal. A lot of the series is spent on team K&K’s fight to become national champions and then world champions, as well as the small storylines of the other team members and characters. Most of it was fine because it was easy to become invested in many of the different characters. But there was this three episode stretch where Han Shanyang and Tong Nian broke up and she didn’t realize it, he was mean to her on purpose then ghosted her and got mad at her when she showed up where he was even though he secretly was happy to see her… and it was the most infuriating, frustrating and slow part of the whole series. To make matters worse i was so bitter and angry at them for their stupidity whatever else was going on in those three episodes I didn’t really care about. The only reason I kept going was because the moment they got back together was so fucking adorable it made up for the previous episodes where I wanted to strangle both of the characters.

One thing I have to bring up. Again, this is an outsiders perspective and I welcome anyone else to comment and give me more information. The patriotism was laid on pretty thick in this drama. I find it awkward even in American television but watching it happen in an Asian drama was fascinating. China is going through a weird time right now (Hell, the WORLD is going through a weird time right now, but China is quickly becoming the top world superpower) with massive protests and a very tightly controlled internet. A major part of the storyline revolves around Han Shanyang coaching his team to become Champions on the world stage to bring glory to China. There is nothing like a sports drama to make your heart swell with pride when your country wins. But who knows. Maybe China is figuring out that the way to really become top of the world is through entertainment. Just how Korean dramas are watched all over the world and BTS is now an internationally beloved pop group, China is going to take us over with their adorable drama series and I know absolutely nothing about Chinese music but maybe there is an army of cute pop stars just waiting for their chance to become international superstars.

My Roommate Is A Gumiho: Ep 8 Highlights

Okay, but we have to talk about one scene in particular. Because it broke my brain. Here’s the backstory: Throughout the series we watch flashbacks of Han Shanyang (known as Gun in the hacker circles) and his old hacking team he was part of with their leader Solo and other characters who are awesome but I can’t remember the names of right now. Basically some drama split the team apart with Gun retiring and both he and Solo starting their own teams as coaches who are now rivals. The two characters are finally thrust together long enough (alcohol was definitely involved) to have a heart to heart. Solo got painfully drunk, throwing up in the bathroom next to a tub full of water (drunks and a bathtub – what could go wrong?) and then he and Han Shanyang get into a heated argument, shouting at eachother. It ends with both of them falling into the bathtub fully clothed and having an emotional moment where they are both soaked, crying, and hugging it out.

You can guess where my brain was. THESE SCENES are why fanfiction exists. But that brings me to another thing I appreciate about Chinese and Korean dramas. Platonic male characters show real affection for each other. Yeah, it’s still a little macho like in America where two bros hug and they have to slap each other on the back so that it doesn’t look “too gay.” But it’s endearing to see men show emotion and embrace each other, and acknowledge each other’s pain. Yes, men have feelings and they should be able to cry it out. There is nothing “feminine” about having feelings and that shit is like poison if you don’t let it out.

The drama trope I secretly love is: girls getting shamelessly drunk. What annoyed me about this drama is they made Tong Nian’s character so childlike and innocent that she gets drunk after drinking one can of whatever. Even the other characters in Go Go Squid were in disbelief. Especially Han Shanyang who was practically assaulted as she kept grabbing him and wouldn’t let him leave the room. It was adorable. We love it.
