Plastic Memories…*sniff*…Plastic Memories is a romance, sci-fi drama *sob* produced by Doga Kobo and directed by Yoshiyuki Fujiwara. *sniff* It’s a ‘for the feels’ anime, such as Angel Beats and Clannad…*sniffs* And…and it got me. *Starts bawling uncontrollably*
DISCLAIMER: Due to the length of this anime, I cannot guarantee this being spoiler free. I’ve tried my best, but I’m not sure. Read at your own risk.

Plastic Memories takes place in a future where humans live in harmony in near identical-to-human androids. The leading company in the android business, SAI Corp, introduce the most lifelike android into the market, known as Giftia. They’re just like humans, except for one little detail: They have about 9 years and 4 months before their memories and personality fade. Right before they reach this point, a branch of SAI Corp, known as the Terminal Service, go out and collect them before they become a danger to society. By the way, did I mention the Giftia get very violent when they lose their memories?
Plastic Memories Episode 10
This is when our main character, Tsukasa Mizugaki comes in. He’s a high school graduate the missed the entrance exams to college because he had appendicitis the day of the exams…lovely. His father, a higher up in SAI Corps, offers him a job in the terminal service so he won’t be a COMPLETE failure.
On his first day, Tsukasa is assigned to a Giftia partner, since the job can get dangerous, named Isla. Isla is a veteran in the business, going for several years. They do a couple of jobs, and start bonding with each other, eventually becoming friends.
Our male protagonist, Tsukasa is a high school graduate who failed to take his college entrance exams because he came down with a sudden case of appendicitis before the exam. Having nowhere else to go, his father offers him a job at the SAI Corp Terminal Service, which he gladly accepts. He’s a hardworking, by the book kid who reads instruction manuals like they’re bibles…yes, he states this in the first couple episodes. He’s the guy who always has a smile on his face, or at least not the one crying when things get really grim.
Review: Plastic Memories, Episode 1: The First Partner
When I watched the first episode for the very first FEFI ever, I thought he was going to have the stereotype of the brown hair: Dull, uninteresting, spouting crap about friendship, and determined. However, he really surprised me in the duration of the anime, bringing a spark of happiness or joy even in the most unfavorable of situations. He makes this different from other ‘feelz’ anime because I’m not crying the whole way through, but in the good way. I’m smiling when I see him and Isla interacting, when he tries his best to make the passing of a Giftia easier, when he tries to cope with Isla coming closer to her expiration date. He makes the show warm my heart, to not make this the most depressing anime of all time.
One complaint I have with his character, however, is the fact that a very character changing event happens in the middle of the series, one that usually affects a character quite significantly. The thing is, though, is that it never really fazes him until he apologizes to the person involved. Trust me, what he does is life scarring, and he never really breaks down or confronts the idea again. Other characters talk about it in the episode after it happens, but…for him at least…it kinda disappears.
Isla is the female protagonist for Plastic Memories, and is now leading the charts of my absolute favorite waifu of all time.
Prime Video: Plastic Memories: Season 1
She’s a veteran Giftia at the SAI Corps Terminal Service, having been working there most of her life. She started out working under Kazuki, up until Kazuki lost her leg in the ‘incident 3 years ago’, which I won’t spoil as it’s a key point of character development for a certain character in particular..it’s not Kazuki. After having her partnership dissolved, Ilsa kinda became the tea girl of the office, just making tea for everyone. That is, until Tsukasa showed up on such short notice that they didn’t really have another Giftia ready to be his partner, so they just gave him Isla…who at the time, had a little over 2 months in her life span.

Isla is very shy and quiet, preferring to keep to herself as opposed to talking with everybody she meets. She’s very modest, not really buying anything to treat herself, unless you count the herbs she buys to make her ‘world famous’ tea. Also, she’s extremely childlike, getting lost very often, being embarrassed a lot (she also hides behind her catchphrase: Error!), keeps a diary, and even doing cute pouty faces sometimes.
As the series progresses, she gets closer and closer to Tsukasa, which in turn means cute character development moments! Such as when they go to a festival, and they start talking over fireworks…I refuse to spoil that scene. Trust me, when the develop her, youtube cats have nothing on her.
Otaku Nuts: Plastic Memories Anime Review
Kazuki was Isla’s partner for 6 years before the ‘incident that happened 3 years ago, ’ where she got her leg damaged to the point of needing it replaced. After that, she kinda dumped Isla, for she was scared of hurting her partner emotional state. She takes up as a leader in the Terminal Service, even though she isn’t the manager, and does a pretty good job. She’s hot tempered, becoming a demon when someone does the slightest thing wrong…such as becoming friends with Isla. Oh yeah, did I mention she’s overprotective of Isla? Combine that with her quite unhealthy drinking issues, then you have a girl who’s going to have you locking all of your doors.
Now, she’s a really important character later on in the show, as she is the primary one who is working to help out Tsukasa and Isla, as she’s one of Isla closest friends. She also provides the audience with a pretty substantial amount of Isla’s backstory which is pretty nice considering Isla rarely talks about herself…like…ever. Kazuki tells why she dissolved her and Isla’s partnership, why Isla would have been hurt, and tells us everything about Isla…like…how long she has left to live.

As you can probably, I don’t really care for her character. Michiru is a worker at the Terminal Service, being the rookie before Tsukasa showed up, and thinks she’s INFINITELY better then Tsukasa because she’s been there a year longer. She’s actually quite emotional under the veneer of self-righteousness and all around meanness, actually being a bit of a romantic. She dreams of a boy to come sweep her off her feet, and carry her into the sunset!
What Are Your Thoughts On Plastic Memories' Ending?
This, in turn, becomes a subplot I wasn’t even sure was a subplot, involving her having feelings towards Tsukasa…yeah, it’s hinted at, but she never says, ‘Oh! I want Tsukasa to throw me down on my desk and take me there!’ No, she shows her romantic side, and then talks about Tsukasa…thats it. And her ‘coming over “it”‘, it being double quoted because I wasn’t sure ‘it’ even existed, was when she said she was rooting for Isla and Tsukasa…sure wrapped up that ‘subplot’, didn’t we?
I would forgive that, but she acts so mean over the duration of the series that I developed a disliking for her. The only part I felt sorry for her for was her tragic past, which ends up being her only character trait besides ‘neglected tsundere’.
One of the best things that Plastic Memories does is to make you feel emotion. They way it makes you feel everything ranging from happiness, sadness, love, loss, content, and hopelessness is perfect, fitting every scene. You never saw me laughing during a somber scene or my crying (except maybe tears of joy) during a happy scene. They know just what to make you feel, how to make you feel, and when to make you feel, to give you this sense of being there, experiencing the events of the story with them.

Ramblings: Plastic Memories [spoilers All]
Also, the main characters are very well developed, even (uggggggghh) Michiru, giving us decent explanation of their pasts, their likes and dislikes, their personalities as a whole, and even giving them all growth as characters. This goes especially to Isla, as she’s the most developed and deep character of the entire anime.
The animation is something worth noting as well. Everything just looks so…pretty in it. I mean, with anime now, I like computer animation and everything, but it sometimes feels too clean. Here, even though it doesn’t look like much of a different, it doesn’t feel that way at all. It has this white, and yet at the same time, quite colorful palette. It sometimes almost looks like a dream.
But by far, my favorite thing about the anime is how they sew this growing seed of dread when they bring in the fact that Isla is close to her expiration date. As you progress through the story, even during the extremely light-hearted moments, you start thinking about how little time she has left in existence.
