Here is my review for Go Go Squid 1. Upon attaching Go Go Squid 1 review, I found out that I have a halfway review for Go Go Squid 2, I stopped doing these so I totally forgot they used to exist.
I highly anticipated the sequel to “Go Go Squid, ” and I’m so sad to report that it disappointed me. I watched it right when it aired and got a little over halfway when I decided to take a break. With the new year, I resolved to finally finish it, mostly by fast-forwarding. The prequel was adorable and sweet. I hoped the author would produce another winner, but this sequel was too cheesy and long.

The first thing that bothered me was the number of cast changes. Li Yitong, who plays Ai Qing, is an excellent actress, and she did a great job with this role. However, it doesn’t negate the fact that this is an older sister-younger brother romance, and the new leading lady looks cuter and closer to the leading man’s age. Also, for a tough, independent female competitor who held her own in the boy’s club, I felt that this softer-looking Ai Qing got a bit too weepy for my taste towards the latter half. I hate it when stories take a strong female character and change them after discovering love.

Eventually, the new Grunt grew on me, but I miss the old Grunt, and why wasn’t Demo brought back? I disliked feeling that this sequel tried to up the eye candy level, such as with the replacement of Solo. Yet, dropping Demo and changing Grunt plus Solo didn’t hurt me as much as seeing the new Xiao Mi. I loved the previous Xiao Mi and his romantic plotline in the prequel – seeing all the Xiao Mi changes was disheartening. This new Xiao Mi looks too young to be talking about retirement.
For a romantic drama, there were some situations I disagreed with. Firstly, why was Grunt so invasive when he first encountered Ai Jing. I didn’t like how aggressive Grunt was at the start of the flirting. Speaking of bold, I am relieved to see comments on Soompi agreeing with me about one particular scene. I am talking about the moment when WU Bai throws a jealous fit and violently grabs his girlfriend and shoves her in the car. It was sickening to see this behavior and witness his lack of trust towards his girlfriend. However, Ai Qing then turns this around as her fault, and she apologizes for it. This was not cool.
Going back to Grunt, I pitied the boy. His ex-girlfriend cheated on him three fucking times, and his mother still wants them back together. I get that the mother didn’t know the whole story and the extent of his ex-girlfriend’s insanity, but I’m still shocked at how crazy his mother is and how willing she was to disrespect the current girlfriend for the deranged ex. I might’ve watched the first half of this drama early last year, which is when these scenes occurred, but these moments stayed with me for how bitter they were. To see Grunt’s mom again later threw me for a tailspin because her change of heart was unrealistic. By the way, Ai Jing was a total miscast; she doesn’t look like an older sister, nor does she look like an older girlfriend. Plus, her face doesn’t match Ai Jing’s personality. Dejectedly, I have no love for this second couple.
First Impressions: Go Go Squid!
Also, the number of times this drama drops Han Shang Yan’s name not to show him on screen was slightly irritating. For a sequel, I totally understand that the focus is on a different couple. However, more fan service could’ve been offered, and viewers should’ve been given more time with Tong Nian and Han Shang Yan. They barely shared any screen time together except at the cheap wedding. Speaking of that wedding, audiences were totally cheated out of a proper one for both couples.
I was extremely relieved that Grandfather wasn’t recast because he’s freaking amazing. I loved seeing him up to his antics trying to get his two grandsons married off. Moreover, Ai Qing/ Jing’s father was awesome, too. They’re both so precious.

“Go Go Squid 2” has no right to be 38-episodes long. There were so many flashbacks, back and forth, and repeats. The show revisits Xiao Ai’s parents’ story, and I truthfully did not need it. Also, I hate the other English title, and although I see how the new Chinese title fits, I prefer the old one and how it matches the prequel.
Watch Go Go Squid 2 Dt.appledog's Time
I don’t want to sound like such an extreme hater. I can admit that the main couple had fantastic chemistry. Their romantic moments were super sweet, and one can feel the love they ooze. Nevertheless, it did get overly cheesy during some bits, but yes, the main pairing developed and grew together well.
Being nice, I will give this a 3/5. I saw some comments hoping for either a Grunt or Solo spinoff. I wouldn’t mind seeing Solo, the self-sacrificing single father, take a jab at finding love. Overall, I wanted to complete “Go Go Squid 2, ” but I wouldn’t say I was happy about it. It does make me want to re-watch “Go Go Squid 1” and relive those glory days, though. I would recommend everyone to watch one and skip two. There’s a lot of fabulous Chinese romance dramas out there with not as much propaganda, so there’s no need to waste your time with this unless you want to, which I stupidly did.

PS: This is just something that is minute to all but bothered me slightly. Please don’t set a show in an international or abroad setting but somehow manage to have all the foreign characters speak Chinese. Also, when they do speak English, please make sure it’s natively accurate.

EDIT: I just read my halfway review and agree with Vivian from last year. I feel the same about everything except that Dt and Apple dog do eventually blossom into a dynamic and engaging couple one would root for. I also want to reiterate because I forgot to mention it, but changing this to robotics was such an intelligent move, and the competitions were intense and fun to watch. Good job!Han Shang Yan, a former legend in the CTF cyber-security esports world, had long retired to set up his own esports club, K&K, to train a group of young teenage boys as professional esports athletes. One evening, after a K&K loss at a CTF competition, Han Shang Yan walks into an internet cafe to cool off. A computer science genius and part-time online singer, Tong Nian had been helping her cousin man his internet cafe one evening when Han Shang Yan walks in and she immediately falls for him at first sight. Usually brave, outgoing, and having tens of thousands of followers from singing covers online, she finds herself wanting to get close to him and makes several clumsy attempts to do so. A further series of coincidences and misunderstandings throw the both of them together and, as Han Shang Yan slowly starts to soften towards her, Tong Nian also finds herself getting involved in K&K's activities and the world of professional esports, even uncovering the past about Han Shang Yan and the reason for his sudden retirement from the esports world. I’ve come to watch this drama, partly because Yang Zi is my favorite actress. Initially, I was holding some reservation because I was not familiar with the major male lead, Li Xian, portraying Han Shang Yan. At my first viewing, I was not very impressed by him; he wasn't that good looking, I thought; as Han Shang Yan, he was rude, mean, nasty - a total jerk. But then, something pulled me in - the contrast of the two main characters and the theme about reaching for your dream. After just the first episode, my doubts about Li Xian dissipated. I got more than what I bargained for.

Upon further research into what the term “CTF” stands for, repeatedly referred to in the drama, I find it is something even more intriguing and more complicated than I would have imagined. CTF means Capture the Flag. It is an information security competition between security professionals about cyber security. It challenges its participants to solve computer security problems and/or capture and defend computer systems. The competition is used as a learning tool to help sharpen the tools they have learned during their training. In another words, what seemingly “a waste of time playing computer” is actually teaching and training the next generation in the most advanced field of artificial intelligence in cyber security which is the next BIG thing.

Li Xian, playing the male lead, is absolutely incredible. The actor has a calm, cool, no-nonsense demeanor. He fits into the Han Shang Yan's character perfectly as if the role
