Nanami’s blood ran cold. His duties? What they’d permit? He had his hands full? Her breaths came shaky and shallow, and she wondered — why did he act like that was all it was to him? He’d spoken such candied words to her only days before; he’d promised her it was serious to him. And now those same actions that he’d insisted were born from the deepest connection possible were nothing more than duties. He’d lied, a voice in her head announced. A lump closed off her throat.
A huff left Tomoe, his fur all but bristling. “I did not fall in love with Mikage. What we shared physically was purely contractual.” He shut his eyes, fluffing the ends of his hair. “Make no mistake — I wish that he had not left. But we were not in love.”

At this question, Nanami felt like her soul was being sucked out of her body. But she wouldn’t do that to Tomoe, she wanted to cry out, her chin quivering. Surely, after what they’d gone through with Narukami, Tomoe saw that. What did it matter if she was in love anyway? The thought flew through her mind before she could censor herself, and hot, frustrated tears stung the corners of her eyes.

Not knowing what else to do, she plucked a slice of rolled omelette with her chopsticks and pushed it to his lips. His eyes widened, pupils dilating, and she swore she heard his breath catch. Had she done something wrong? Before she could fret, however, he parted his lips ever so slightly, and he accepted the offering. His velvet tongue swept over the tips of the chopsticks, and she fixated on the action, her thoughts hurtling to the night before. Her cheeks overheated.
No, she wasn’t thinking about this already, she chided herself, her hands shaking. It was hard not to when she was still undressed, save for the yukata draped across her back and shoulders, when he licked his lips with such a dazzling look in his amethyst eyes. She swallowed hard, flicking her gaze down to the plates as she worked a piece of fish off the bone, but instead of feeding it to herself, she brought the chopsticks to Tomoe’s mouth again.
Once more, he closed his lips around the meat, his eyes locked on hers. His lips lingered for a beat too long, and then he slid down the chopsticks, all but kissing the tips. She gulped, watching him chew, his eyes glued to her. Crap, he’d gotten her flustered over nothing.

ALT I sometimes see people argue about one of these circles as though it were all three circles. Sometimes something can totally make sense in-universe, and fit with the themes of the story, the characters, etc… And you just don’t like it for whatever reason. Maybe it wasn’t done well in spite of that, or touched a nerve, etc. Maybe you loved a story, and it was an excellent exploration of a character, but it would be totally fair to call out the technical nonsense, and how, even in-universe, it doesn’t add up. And maybe you thought this episode of a show was GREAT! But it was non-canon, nothing made sense, and, ultimately, it was UTTER NONSENSE. And so on, and so forth. Heck, you could fairly add more circles to this. I’m keeping it simple with three. My point is mostly that there’s nuance to opinions, and sometimes, someone not liking something in a story has nothing to do with whether it made sense, or complimented the narrative. Those things can be separate points. Stories don’t have to be a failure at everything to be disliked, or succeed at everything to be liked, and arguing as though that were the case is silly.

I also can’t believe just how thick it is; I’ve clearly done a LOT of writing, and seeing it in physical form makes the amount of work I’ve put into this series more real. I’m proud tbh! And I’m so flattered and tickled that Kiki wanted to make my story into a book. Serious kudos to her; it looks so good!Summary: [AU] Nanami had just finished college when she fell into a time slip, taking her back 500 years in the past to the World Over Yonder. With limited options to survive, she takes a job at a famed brothel as a courtesan. Her original hopes of saving up enough money for better options are dashed, but when she hears of a certain fox who has the ability to travel to the mundane world, she loses her head and forgets what a dangerous yokai he is. If he can’t help her get back home, then perhaps at the very least they can help each other change. [Warning: Sexual coercion, assault, abuse, and uncomfortable sexual scenes (none of this is between Tomoe/Nanami). Meant for a very mature audience from an emotional lens, so if you’re looking for pure smut, this is not the fic for you.]
Notes: When I wrote this fic, it was not meant to use sex work as a novelty. Some of the sex scenes depicted are uncomfortable, but removing them affected the impact so I had to keep them. None of those are meant to be titillating, and focus more on the emotional aspect. But I do write it out (with very limited description of physical sensations) so be warned. I'll provide warnings in individual chapters to be safe. Depending on your feelings towards sex work (it’s all non con vs. dub con vs. it’s empowering), this story may or may not be triggering.
