True Beauty Drama Rating

True Beauty was a highly anticipated Korean Drama release of 2021 and has been adapted from a popular South Korean webtoon written and illustrated by Yaongyi. It is safe to say that fans of the webtoon, like myself were delighted to hear that it was being adapted into a full-fledged Korean Drama with a superb cast. Many fans of K-pop group ASTRO were also excited as it meant they were going to see vocalist Cha Eun Woo appear on their screens again as an actor. So it’s safe to say many people had high hopes for this 16 episode drama but did it excel and satisfy us or did it just confirm exactly why adaptions just don’t work?

True Beauty is a romantic comedy about a high school girl Lim Jugyeong, who is being bullied at school based on how she looks. However, when her family is forced to move, she changes schools and masters the art of make-up from YouTube. She has a fresh start at her new high school — and rises to fame as everyone begins to admire how she looks. But Jugyeong would rather die than reveal her bare face to anyone. However, this backfires when the only one who saw her without makeup, Lee Su Ho attends the same school as her! The two begin to grow closer when they meet each other sharing their secrets and finding love with each other. However, she also gets tangled up with school bad boy Han Seo-Jun who begins to take a liking to her too

Korean

The plot of True Beauty pretty much takes after your standard rom-com Korean Drama with the tropes of a love triangle, the Cinderella story and being childhood friends. But the difference is with True Beauty is that it seems to nail all these tropes particularly well and even add its own twist on them at times too. The plotting of True Beauty is also a fairly easy one to follow and is structured very well so there is no risk of getting confused about what is going on. The drama also definitely nails the comedy and humorous aspect with exactly the right amount of funny moments that were executed so well by the cast. In my books, this is a huge positive as sometimes I find that Korean dramas can try too hard to incorporate comedic moments which can come off as cringy. But this was not the case with True beauty at all as it strikes the perfect balance between, comedy, plotting and pacing all together.

An Honest Review Of 'true Beauty'

The plot of True Beauty focusses a lot on the love triangle that takes place between Seojun, Suho and Jugyeong so if you are not a fan of this trope then True Beauty may not be the drama for you. But as someone who has read the webtoon there are subtle changes to the plotting of this and extra side character arcs incorporated which made the drama more well rounded than the webtoon itself (but we will explore that further in this post!). One bone I do have to pick with the plotting of the drama and some of the storylines that are embedded within some characters is that it only goes surface level into some of the mental health issues and family issues it depicts in there. It would have been great to touch upon these topics on a deeper level but I also do understand why the drama shied away from it as these topic are not explored in depth in the webtoon and the fact the drama was taking a much more light-hearted tone than a serious one.

True Beauty has a stellar cast, many of which you may recognise from previous popular Korean Drama’s and even an idol from well known K-pop group Astro. In the months leading up to the drama, there was much speculation of who was going to take the three lead roles and I was nicely surprised and satisfied to hear the line up when it was announced!

Moon Ga-young takes the role as Lim Jugyeong and is very well known for her stints in Korean drama’s such as Tempted, EXO Next Door and Find Me in Your Memory. I found she was the perfect actress to play the main character Lim Jugyeong and truly embodied her character to the T! Lim Jugyeong is a character dealing with many insecurities about herself in terms of how she looks. She was bullied and used a lot in her old school and is certainly determined to have a fresh start at —. Her character is depicted very similarly to the webtoon but the difference with the Korean drama is that Jugyeong goes on a journey to accept herself and realize that there are people who care about her regardless of what she looks like. The drama also put more focus on Lim Jugyeong and his family which is something I felt the webtoon was originally missing. The dynamics between Jugyeong, Suho and Seojun were also set out very well as you can see how they differ from each other (as well as how oblivious Jugyeong is that she is stuck in a web triangle).

But the only issue I had with Jugyeong’s character is that again we don’t get to fully explore her issues more regarding mental health. It is very much surface level. However, I am also very much aware of how this drama as well as the webtoon depict what being ‘ugly’ is. Although Jugyeong learns to accept herself as she is by the end of the drama many watchers will have qualms about how the whole topic of beauty was approached in this drama (which is entirely understandable given how debatable the topic is within our society today).

Fans of ASTRO’s Cha Eun Woo were able to rejoice as he took the role of Lee Suho, an attractive and handsome boy who appears cold but is actually very caring. Cha Eun Woo has also had successful acting stints in dramas such as My ID is Gangnam Beauty and Rookie Historian Goo Hae-ryung. Cha Eun Woo was probably a great choice in actor for the role of Lee Suho because of the slight parallels this role has with the previous role he took in My ID is Gangnam Beauty. The two Korean dramas have very similar premises and not only was Cha Eun Woo able to perform rather strongly as Lee Suho, but he was also able to demonstrate how he has developed as an actor too.

Lee Suho is your typical cold-hearted character who has a difficult relationship with his father and a past that has caused his previous friendship with Han Seojun to breakdown. His character growth and development is slow and steady as we begin to unravel the bitter past that lies between Seojun and his father and see him struggle with the guilt of his past. I was never entirely convinced by the chemistry that lay between Suho and Jugyeong, but I am putting that down the fact that I just so happen to be more on the Team Seojun side of things from kdrama perspective and webtoon.

If you haven’t heard of Hwang In Yeop before you probably have now because he stole the hearts of many has he took the role as bad boy Han Seo Jun. He is an upcoming and rising actor and if I am being frank Hwang Inyeop in a way carried the entire drama. He was able to embody his role and portrayed Seojun’s cool yet adorable character well. I might be slightly biased as I am certainly on Team Seojun but the hype around this actor was very much real with him dominating my Tik Tok and Instagram feeds. It is safe to say he caught the eye of many and left webtoon fans relatively satisfied with his performance from the moment he was introduced! Of course he, unfortunately, falls into the trope of second male lead as his feelings begin to grow for Jugyeong which stays true to the webtoon in some sense.

True

The emotion and angst from Seojun’s character was also really well fleshed out by the scripting of the drama and compared to Suho, I felt Seojun was more or less easier to read when it came to expressing emotion. But it is frustrating how Seojun quite literally becomes a bridge that helps Jugyeong and Suho get together meaning he never really stood a chance with her in the end.

Kang Soo-Jin is played by Park Yoo-Na who is again another up and coming actress with a notable role in the highly-rated Korean Drama Sky Castle. Interestingly Soo Jin started as an extremely likeable character who became close with Jugyeong and defended her. I was a huge fan of this portrayal compared to the webtoon but it, unfortunately, did not last as her character development just turned plain sour. Simply put she typically becomes the villain of the show because she suddenly developed feeling for Suho and didn’t like Jugyeong being with him.
