Few manga are as true to their title as Berserk. Taking place in an alternate Medieval universe of sorts, this epic series conjures up a world plagued by vicious monsters, equally vicious monstrous humans, constant warfare and apocalyptic mayhem of the bloodiest kind. In other words, it is a gorehound’s dream.
We follow Guts, a scarred warrior who will stop at nothing on his quest for revenge. Armed with a massive sword and having transformed his left arm into a weapon, Guts is a prodigy of strength on a warpath and a far cry from the typical hero. The fact that he is the protagonist is very telling, Berserk sets itself as an extremely dark tour of force that has no qualms when it comes to graphic depictions of rape, torture and massive slaughter. More than the usual conflict between good and evil what is at stake here is a clash between gradients of evil and perversity.
The bleak tone is set right away as the manga opens with Guts having sex with a woman who right away morphs into a beastly creature. In no time Guts is hacking his way through hordes of demons in a swirl of violence that is only an appetizer for what is to come. There is a bit of everything, from black magic to body horror, all leading up to a grand climax of cataclysmic proportions that is pure hell.

Through a very long flashback we learn how Guts became an embittered man whose trail is strewed with the mangled remains of humans, monsters, animated corpses and everything in between.
One of the things Beserk has going for it is the very solid artwork. It is reminiscent of Western comics as befits the European setting. It is also highly detailed and comprehensively so, flying heads and bizarre monstrosities are depicted with the same care as ethereal beauties of the most deadly kind. The action packed scenes flow wonderfully well and mimic the illusion of movement almost flawlessly. The body horror element is particularly well accomplished with truly creepy transformation sequences that can be quite distressing. It plays a very important role in a story in which appearances should not be trusted.
Not only does Berserk go all out when it comes to carnage as it caters to psychological horror, it merges the two in an extremely dark vision that spares no one. Depravity runs so rampant that even without the diabolical sacrifices and supernatural onslaught there would still be enough shocking content to warrant the R+ rating.

Berserk pushes the boundaries of what manga as a medium can accomplish and has been adapted into an anime series that covers the first arcs and more recently into a series of animated movies. It should be kept in consideration that these adaptations are all partial even if worth checking out, the manga is still ongoing and has been resumed after a very long hiatus.
Despite its length, spanning 37 volumes and with no end in sight, Berserk is a perfect introduction to the world of gory manga. Its Western-like aesthetics make it a great title for those less familiar with Japanese 2D culture and one that fans of horror comics are very likely to enjoy.

For me, it has been a year of procrastination and failures. I sincerely hope that it has been different for you, dear reader, and you are able to enjoy a well-earned rest, perhaps reading some manga or watching some anime, if you’re in that kind of stuff.
Today I thought of sharing a list of anime and manga I would like to recommend to all who sometimes enjoy extremely violent fiction (not suitable for children). Below is a sort of countdown of my personal favorites in this genre. Can you guess all of them without looking in the description at the end of this post?

6. Hellsing (OVA); Strengths Рendless carnage; some epic scenes can really give goosebumps, outstanding voice acting in both the original and dubbed versions. Weaknesses Рhorribly clich̩ anime humour scenes that do not fit the theme at all; weak plot and no character development
5. Dorohedero (manga); Strengths – design and style; dozens of mysteries; rich imaginary universe; (visually) intriguing characters. Weaknesses – nearly impossible to associate with reality; fluctuates between extremely dark themes and immature anime elements
4. Gantz (anime); Strengths – merciless plot, absurd and grotesque situations; (exaggerated?) display of perversion and selfishness of human nature. Weaknesses – the same absurd and grotesque situations; unsolved story

3. Shigurui (anime); Strengths – nearly realistic; very dark; superb soundtrack and animation; watching it is somehow similar to seeing a strange and distant vision. Weaknesses – at some parts too sadistic for my taste; not exactly a mood lifter, but nor is any other from this ranking
2. Berserk (anime, manga, movies); Strengths – the sense of humanity’s inferiority and vanity of it’s struggles (it is best displayed in the anime); each of the mediums provides slightly different experience and yet they all are unforgettable; perfect soundtrack, which is great for reading the manga as well; compelling dark medieval universe. Weaknesses – the quality of the story degrades over time and becomes a horrible hybrid of it’s former maturity and supernatural school kid type manga
1. Vinland Saga (manga); Strengths – good balance between the fictional and historical; interesting storyline; character development; realistic settings. Weaknesses – the characters weren’t exactly convincing – that’s all I can think of now, I actually put Vinland Saga at the top because it has less weaknesses than BerserkGore and violence in Anime have always fascinated me, I've even written an entire list of the Top 16 Most Violent, Bloody, and Gory Anime ever created. While Anime is excellent, there's something peculiarly dark about reading gore in black and white manga. Also, since manga are less 'popular' globally, the authors allow themselves to be more brutal in their depictions of bloodshed and slaughter. I'm not personally a violent person, but I guess we all get the urge to stare in shock at dismembered body parts and wonder what the hell is going on. So if you're looking for recommendations about the most mind-shocking-eye-popping-from-your-head bloodiest manga ever created, this list is for you.
Berserk, Akira, Gunnm
This manga follows Yosuke Kobayashi, a police detective working on what seems to be a serial killer case. The murders he comes across are very gruesome and violent as the killer's signature is the delicate and meticulous mutilation of his victim's limbs. The series gradually evolves into a complex story that shows the detective slowly drowning into the depths of insanity as he starts to understand and perhaps even relate to the killer's ideas and desires.
Domu is the story of a small ecosystem of apartments and their tenants spiraling into chaos and slaughter. A police force is first dispatched to investigate a series of 32 suicides that seem to all have taken place in the same location. The investigation fails to detect the culprit and explain how all these individuals have fallen to their death from the heights of an unreachable roof.
The protagonist’s first name is Guts, and that is also something that you will get to see a lot in this manga (yes, yes, I’m also a comedian). On a more serious note, Berserk is one of the best manga to have ever been crafted by the manga gods and grace our earth. Berserk is a tale of vengeance, growth, pitfalls, and glory. It examines themes of isolation and friendship, the symmetry of good and evil - and all the grey areas in between - but most importantly, it illustrates the worst and finest sides of human nature.
