Her Private Life (Korean: 그녀의 사생활 ) is a 2019 South Korean television series, created by Kim Hye-young and directed by Hong Jong-chan, starring Park Min-young and Kim Jae-wook. Developed by Studio Dragon and produced by Bon Factory Worldwide, the show is based on a web novel called Noona Fan Dot Com (Korean: 누나팬닷컴 ; RR: Nunapadatkeom) writt by Kim Sung-yeon and published in 2007.
Sung Deok-mi (Park Min-young) is a talted chief curator of Cheum Museum of Art, who also happs to have a secret: she is a fanatic fangirl of White Ocean's Cha Shi-an (Jung Jae-won). In addition, she is also the fansite manager of the famous The Road to Sian (Korean: 시안은 나의 길 ; RR: Sianeun Naui Gil;
Sian is My Way), the abbreviation of which (Korean: 시나길 ; RR: SiNaGil) she uses as her scre name. Ryan Gold (Kim Jae-wook) is a standoffish artist who develops Stdhal syndrome, evtually retiring as an artist. After the currt boss, Uhm So-hye (Kim Sun-young), is investigated for embezzlemt, Ryan Gold becomes the new Art Director of Cheum Museum of Art.

An Olympic silver medalist in judo who ops his own gym and becomes an instructor. After his single mother abandoned him in the hospital, Deok-mi's mother took him in and raised him with Deok-mi as family.

Like Deok-mi, she is also a fangirl of Cha Shi-an who oft voices her sadness she can no longer be a full-time fan after becoming a mother. It was just the drama I was looking to watch while I was on my two-week work placement this summer. It had also been recommended to me by one of my friends quite a few times as well as popping up almost all the time on Twitter when it aired. I finished Her Private Life in two weeks which was perfect but did I understand the excitement around the drama?
Her Private Life is a romantic comedy Korean Drama about Song Deok Mi who has been a dedicated fangirl for many years. She works as an art curator at Cheum Gallery, where she has hidden her fangirl side from her colleagues and her family. However, that changes when new art gallery director Ryan Gold leaving her in jeopardy of having her secret exposed.
I loved the premise that this drama had, and of course, the plot is very basic, but it is still incredibly entertaining. This is due to the scripting and the superb acting/cast within Her Private Life. The drama focusses on the life of a fangirl and has been a hit with so many fans. It’s something people can relate too, and it’s done in a light-hearted and comedic way which makes it so enjoyable to watch on screen.
K Drama Premiere:
The show actually highlights a lot of the fan culture that you would see in South Korea and the different types of fans you have. You have ones that admire from afar and some that are a tad obsessive over the idol. This all worked and gelled so well with the drama too. Not only that you also get this really lovely backstory/mystery to Ryan Gold and Lee Sol’s paintings. I really appreciated the attention to art that this drama had as it gave it another layer to it. This meant that just focused on all the fangirl antics Deok Mi got up to but also explored Ryan Gold’s characterisation in some depth too.
The plot to Her Private Life might be simple, but to me, it is done quite well. It’s easy to follow without getting too messy and is not overdone at all.
Park Mi Young takes the role of undercover fangirl Song Deok Mi. I was really looking forward to seeing Park Mi Young’s acting after hearing such great things about her after her stint in What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim. Deok Mi was a lovable character who is presented as a warm and kind. She even runs her own fan page and has her entire apartment full of Shi An momentos. I found her to be relatable, cute and was just so much fun to watch throughout the drama as she tried to keep her fangirl identity under wraps. But what I really admired about Deok Mi’s character is that she is bloody good at her job. She knows what she is doing, and while she is a passionate fangirl she proves she can be professional. I think it is so rare for Korean dramas to give this representation of females, so I was delighted to see it here.
