Kyoukai no Kanata is a 12-episode anime animated by Kyoto Animation. The story is set in a world of humans and youmu, which monsters that stem from negative human emotions like fear or hatred that roam in our world. In this world, Spirit World Warriors, are people gifted with special powers to take down youmu, and after defeating them, the youmu turns into a youmu stone. They either keep it as a possession or sell it for money. In the story, we follow our main lead Kanbara Akihito, a rare-breed of half-human and half-youmu that possesses the power of immortality. One day, he sees a girl in glasses that is trying to commit suicide from the top of the school, and rushes to stop her. However, once he got to the top, he is caught by surprise as the girl, Kuriyama Mirai, makes a sword out of her blood and stabs him. Since he is immortal, he survives the attack, and even though both Akihito and Mirai had quite an unpleasant first meeting, they eventually start becoming friends.
Akihito himself is a likable main character. He has a “glasses fetish, ” and as you would expect, is really attracted to girls that wear glasses (like Mirai). Since Akihito is a half-youmu, when he is heavily injured, his youmu side takes over and goes on a rampage. Throughout his life, he has been viewed as a monster by many others. Even though he tries his best to suppress the youmu within him, he still has done many regrettable things in his life, even if he didn’t mean to do it. Since he is different from everyone else, he himself feels that he is an outcast and still lives with a sense of guilt and regret. He doesn’t want to be viewed as a monster, but as a human. However, the truth is that a part of him will always be a youmu.

Our female lead character, Kuriyama Mirai, has a similar predicament as Akihito. She is the last descendent of the Clan of the Cursed Blood, a group of Spirit World Warriors that can manipulate their blood as a weapon. Throughout history, the clan has been shunned and killed off not only because the ability to control blood is looked down upon, but also because they were one of the most powerful groups of warriors, and the other warriors did not want them to gain power. Throughout her life, Mirai has also been rejected and seen as a monster for possessing such powers. She also has her own past and regrets to deal with, and believes that she should be alone because she doesn’t belong with other people.
Boku No Hero Academia Season 2
Since both Akihito and Mirai are different from everyone else, they start to become friends and grow closer to each other. They find acceptance and happiness in each other, and as Mirai puts it, feel normal when they are together since they are so different from everyone else. The interactions and development between these two characters as they start to accept and appreciate themselves for who they are is what makes this show good. The main message of the show is to appreciate someone for who they are, not what they are or where they came from, and to be close with the ones you care about. That is the main driving force for our two lead characters.
As for the supporting characters, there aren’t a huge cast of them. The most important ones are Hiromi and Mitsuki Nase. While they aren’t as developed as our main characters, they are still very likable and enjoyable. Mitsuki is the younger sister, and help provide support to our main leads. Hiromi is the older brother, and he works hard and strives to be as good of a Spirit World Warrior as his sister Izumi. He also has a “sister complex, ” which means he kind of likes his sister. He also likes to wrap his hands around Akihito’s waist for no reason. While he’s not in action, he is actually quite a weird person.
And while we are talking about the silly things about Hiromi, we should also talk about some of the more lighthearted moments of this anime. This anime is indeed set in high school and is almost like a slice of life anime. There are many “normal life” and funny moments in the show, and there are also some Moe elements, more specifically with Kuriyama-san. Basically, for those unfamiliar with the word, Moe just means “cute girls doing cute things.” Usually, Mirai has a lighthearted and cute personality, and her favorite quote is “Fuyukai desu!” which means “How unpleasant!” Seriously, after watching this show, that quote is now stuck in my head. But unlike many other Moe characters, Kuriyama-san actually has a strong personality to her, which makes her very memorable. So, while the high school setting and cute moments of the show may turn some people off initially, if you continue watching, the good part is that it allows you to feel more attached and connected to the characters and you end up caring for them more.

Finally, I would like to talk about the ending of the anime. While I won’t spoil the ending, you can tell through the ending there will definitely be a second season. It’s not the type of ending that just makes you unsatisfied and crave for a second season, but it just makes you feel good. It’s doesn’t leave you with a strong wanting for a second season because of how abrupt it ended. It manages to conclude this part of the story really well and will leave you satisfied, but will also leave you wondering about a few things at the end.
For the soundtrack, while there were some epic tracks for the battle scenes and the dramatic moments, it wasn’t too impressive. I had listened to some of the soundtrack, but none of the musical tracks were truly great. The animation though, deserves a lot of praise for its high quality and production values. Kyoto Animation has been known for their detailed and smooth animation, and has proven it with other popular shows such as The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and Clannad. This time though, they managed to deliver once again. The highlights of the whole show are the fight scenes, which are well choreographed and are very fluid and detailed. As for all of the other scenes in the show, it all still looks pretty good though.

To be honest, Kyoukai no Kanata had exceeded all of my expectations. The show has a great balance between the Moe/high school setting and the action and dramatic moments of the show. Kyoto Animation has never been known for their action shows, since most of their shows are of the high school and Moe genre, like Clannad, Lucky Star and Hyouka. But, even though this show is very different from what they usually do, they have proven to be able to do excellent animation, so I knew I was going to get a show with good action scenes and a decent story. However, the show surprised me by turning to a much darker direction halfway through, and gave us a great story in the end. And while you’re at it, also watch Episode 0: Shinonome, which is an episode of an event mentioned in the show but never shown. However, despite its name being Episode 0, it contains a lot of spoilers and should be watched only after Episode 10. I would definitely recommend watching Kyoukai no Kanata, as it is definitely worth a watch. Quelle: /anime/8908
